I am a Canadian citizen coming to England on a working holiday-maker visa. How does this work with income tax if I'm in a position where I am considered self-employed and my employer therefore doesn't pay taxes for me? Do I pay income tax in Canada or in England?

If anyone has an information on this or on who I should talk to about this, that would be great!

Hello,

I think the best people to talk to would be Inland revenue here in the UK and the revenue Canada. I have heard of people having to pay tax on whatever they earnt over here when they returned to Canada, so make sure you check. It might also depend on how long you are over here for.
Hope this helps a little Smile

You could always apply for non-residency status... don't have to bother with Canadian income tax at all.

Of course, your Canuck health care temporarily goes out the window... but if you're settling in the UK (even on a temporary basis), it's not very useful to you, is it?

I came to the UK as a holiday-maker nearly 10 years ago and I was only allowed to earn £50 per week. In the UK, you don't need to pay tax for earnings below £87 per week - I would not bother letting Revenue Canada take their share of what little you will have earned.

As for health insurance - I paid for a full year of health care with Alberta Health (over $400 at the time) only to find that I was covered by the UK's National Health Service anyway.

Good luck!
