Increase in Denial of TN's/ TN Renewals?

Post Tue Jul 08, 2008 2:57 pm

Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I'm getting the impression that its getting increasingly difficult to obtain a first-time TN or a TN renewal recently. Is this an accurate reflection of reality, or are we just hearing from more people who were turned down rather than approved? I'm nervous as I'm flying home to renew my passport and hopefully my TN (this would be 2nd TN only). My first TN application process was unbelievably easy. I had my employment letter, original transcripts that show my degrees obtained, photocopies of my degrees and professional certification (law), my c.v. and photocopies of my publications. I wasn't even asked questions about my employment etc., the US border guard just took my $$ and issued me the TN and my husband his TD. Now, it seems to me that I have reason to be concerned about my success and ability to fly back from Calgary with the same documents this year. Any thoughts?

I've never had a problem, and I'm on my 4th (I just got one in March)

Got my second @ Pearson Toronto a month ago June 08.
Waited 4 hrs but the officer only looked @ my document for 10 mins. Paid 50 bucks and got stamped, than flight to SFO.
I guess she is tied up with others or maybe just not so efficient.

My son got his at Pearson on July 26, though the wait was for 30 minutes, the stamp/I94 was done in just 2, no questions asked, only orginal degree certificate seen. The officer explained to my son that he could have multiple entry.

One thing I will say is that USCIS at YYC seems to be more competent than USCIS at Sweetgrass, so definitely fly.

My son left July 26, 2008, flight boarding at 10.15AM, reached airport at 8.30. When we returned home at 9.15 he called to say that he was through with the TN status and having his breakfast.

I came back through Calgary, submitted all my documents, filled out forms etc. and was very clear in making my request for another (my 2nd) year. The officer asked a few questions, gave a quick glance at my docs, took my husband's and my passports, was stamping, stapling etc. and told us it was all good, extended, no problem, head off on our flight and he'll finish up 'the paperwork.' We didn't notice until we were on the plane that although he told us it was all good and extended, he didn't change my expiry date from last year. I tried to speak with Immigration at SFO but they wouldn't help - tried the "Deferred Inspections" Office in San Fran and they wouldn't help (just told me to fly back and try again) - which would be my husband and I.spending another $1000. Yikes.

If you'd gone through Sweetgrass you'd probably still be sat there waiting.
