Industrial Electrician thinking about going down under

Post Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:47 pm

Hi all.
I have done a pile of checking out what the scoop for me would be to head down to Australia and was just wondering if anybody on these boards has them self or knows of a friend who is an electrician in Canada and went down to Australia so I could ask a couple questions and hear their experience. Somebody in the know about fly in fly out jobs would be my ideal person to chat with. I'd like to know a little of what I can expect from an experience point of view and know a bit of what it's all "aboot".
Thanks.

Hey,

I've seen that you haven't had any replies to your question, so I thought I would at least give you something.

I'm from Vancouver, been living in Aus for 1.5 yrs, came over with my tradie bf. Trades here are the same in Canada, namely you have to break in to the market through knowing someone, then you are sweet. If you are really interested in coming over, either get a hookup through a company in Canada that will start you at the top-level work you are looking for, or come to Aus, get on with a larger company for a few months and sort out your requirements and make a few friends, then move to the kind of work you want.

You'll be paid better here, so no worries on that front, even if you have to do your time in a position that is not what you are looking for. The Aus economy is stable and there is always work for tradesmen.
