Does anyone know if non-residents of Canada are required to pay tax on inheritance? My father died nearly 2 years ago and my brother (executor) is still trying to wrap up with Estate. He's informed me today that as I'm a non-resident he is supposed to withhold 15% of what I am to be paid and forward that to Revenue Canada. I was pretty certain that I am exempt from paying taxes on inheritances. On top of my share of the estate, I am also to be re-paid $3000 that I loaned my father; would I have to pay tax on that?

Any advice greatly appreciated!
