Inome Tax on Youth Mobility Visa

Post Sun May 08, 2011 9:08 am

Hi all,
I am a Canadian that has been travelling for over a year. I was in the UK last year for 5 months travelling/working and now I am trying to do my taxes online for last year, 2010 and am not sure how to account for my UK income?
I have not received a P60 from my employer yet, because the UK financial year is different to Canada's. So do I put that income (from Sept-Dec 2010) on next year's return, or do I wait until I get it from my employer (delaying my tax return even further) and then calculate the portion that pertains up until Dec 31, 2010 only?
Also, I believe my employer mentioned that I wasn't taxed very much on the amount I made there, but he wasn't sure why... maybe because I was a traveller or because the wage was so low? But does that mean once I put it on my Canadian tax return, that I may acutally owe some money to the CRA?
I am still abroad, now in Australia, and am having a difficult time contacting the CRA to ask them these questions.
Any help or advice? please? :)

Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!

I had the same trouble when I moved back to Canada from NZ. My advice is to find an accountant who knows how to handle expat situations. Taxes are complicated enough without the extra hassle of having worked out of country! Mine offered me advice for free and I didn't pay him until I got him to do my taxes. Look into it. It'll save you some serious stress.
