Hi all,

Hi all, new to CanuckAbroad. I have been reading up on the forums and learned that a Canadian can stay in the US for a maximum of 180 days. I intend to go to grad school in the States. The question might be obvious and silly, but would staying in the States for 3 months then reenter with a student visa upon admision be a problem?

This might be a little off topic but if I intend to purchase a car, can one get insured insured with no "status"?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't think there would be a problem with staying for three months as a tourist then re-entering as a student. I'm not sure whether the school would send student visa paperwork to a US address if there is no clearly defined status.you might need to have it mailed to a Canadian address. I think you would be able to get auto insurance--especially since you could point to your future status as a student--but you might need to shop around.

Unless you're paying cash for the car, you may not be able to purchase with a loan or lease. Lenders are very leary of giving out money these days, especially to people who are only here temporarily, which you would be as a student.

It's not a problem doing it that way round, because F-1 can stay during the course of study. Doing it the other way around can create problems, i.e. if you stay in the US for more than six months in F-1 status then leave and try to re-enter as B-2.

It's pretty much like moving to another province, have your abstract from Canada, but some insurance companies place no weight on that at all (shop around), getting a local driver's licence will help.

Thx Steve, Reba,

I intend to pay in full for the car. I hold a Mass driver's license already and have a Social Security Card so getting insured in Boston should not be any problems right? ie when I go to register a new car plate at the RMV, they wont check if I am a Citizen or not right?

If you already have a current and valid license, they probably won't even blink at you.
