Intership in Sydney

Post Mon Sep 21, 2009 9:38 pm

Hello all !

I am researching the possibility of doing a 3 to 4 month internship(paid work experience) in Sydney next Canadian summer (mid-may to end-August 2010)as part of my university program. I am doing a Bachelor in Business Administration with a specialty in Hospitality and Tourism Management, so I would like to find something in this industry (attractions, hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, etc.). Has anyone managed to plan an internship from Canada( set it up before arriving to Australia) or has tips about how to find companies that will be willing to hire a Canadian student for a short period of time ? What type of visa do I need to do this type of work ? Where can I find prospective employers ?

I have already been to Australia twice: once on a working holiday visa (not eligible for a second) and the other with a visitor's visa. My Australian boyfriend lives in Sydney and we have been in a long distance relationship for almost 3 years. My student status gives me the flexibility to travel to Australia to be with him, but I am running out of options: studying in Australia with an international status or getting another visitor's visa are not financially sustainable at this point. The internship idea seemed like a perfect way to gain work experience, earn a bit of money and allow our relationship to evolve, but I know it will not be simple to work out. So I'm starting my research early, in the hopes that those with experience, contacts or any good advice will help me reach my goal.

Thanks in advance !
