Interview, what to say at customs

Post Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:18 am

Here's my situation. I have all the necessary background to quality for a TN visa. I'm in Canada. If an American company specifically sets up an interview for me in Virgina and writes me an interview letter, is it ok to tell US customs at the airport that I am going to the US for one day to attend this specific interview? Or will they turn me away. I heard it's illegal to enter as a tourist with the hidden intention of going job hunting. But this is a different situation, isnt it?
Has anyone else had an interview set up this way before?

Thanks for your help

I've done it that way, pretty much, although the regs seem to say you can't. http://www.americanlaw.com/b-1ifm.html plus these activities for Canadians: http://www.naftatnlawyer.com/additional ... business-/

Attending an initial business meeting with a new client? Consulting with business associates?

Reading through that I wonder how I got in, can't remember what I said exactly.
Steve.

I had no problem travelling to the US for a pre-scheduled interview. I only had a small carry-on as my luggage, and nothing else, so that might have made it easier as well.

If you had 2 big suitcases and said you were going to scout around for jobs, they might get suspicious that you wouldn't be coming back :)

I would indeed have no luggage, since I'd only be going for the day. Thanks everyone for your replies, I appreciate it!

I actually told the agent I was going to a job interview. He let me in, no question asked. I didn't know we couldn't fly to the US to get a job.
