Is “Looking for TN jobâ€

Post Mon Oct 22, 2007 11:04 am

I see most people get TN while they are still in Canada. What if I am trying to enter USA for the sole purpose of looking for a TN job there? Is this a valid reason for entry? I know, shopping, visiting friend, attending conference, touring, etc, are valid reasons. If the border officer asks me why I want to go to USA, I answer “looking for a job, then transfer to TN status. I know I can live in the states up to half a year. I will follow the rules and come back to Canada in time if no job found in half a yearâ€

actually, that would be a valid reason for them to deny you entry!

Is "going for a job inteview" a valid reason to enter USA?

If not, does it mean every one should get a TN job offer while in Canada unless he/she lies to go to USA to look for job first?

If you take evidence with you that you are there for an interview only, and intend to return to Canada after it (not stay to look for an apartment for instance).

Maybe you could try to keep all your questions to one thread eh?

Its not a valid reason to enter the U.S. If you have a scheduled interview get a letter from the company which memorializes this then request to enter as a visitor.

You cannot enter the States "looking for a job" actually, if during a TN interview they ask "how did you get this job, or hear about it?" never ever ever say you got it when visiting the US.

Also be careful with your terminology.

In your post you say: "I know I can live in the states up to half a year." That is actually false. You MAY enjoy the PRIVILEGE of VISITING the US for up to 6 months. But you cannot live in the States for up to 6 months. The key word here is VISIT. Also, always remember you have no rights. The officer may allow you certain privileges, but is not obliged to let you enter for 6 months.
