Is a TN needed for conducting educational workshops?

Post Thu Jun 10, 2010 9:35 pm

Hello everyone:

I am a mathematician/university professor and while I know that this is one of the professions listed as a category for a TN, I have wondered for a long time if it is necessary for me to apply for a TN when I conduct a workshop that I am paid to give at a conference for teachers. Does anyone know if a TN is needed for someone who is conducting workshops or leading seminars at educational conferences?

Thank you.

Since you've been doing this for years (and declaring that you are doing so when you cross the border), CBP correctly lets you in in B1 -- business visitor -- status.
This site is a travel site and not best source for these topics:
TN and TD info: http://forums.immigration.com/forumdisp ... -TN-Status
For US/Cdn taxes and SS/CPP:forums.serbinski.com/index.php

Hello:

I have a similar question.

I am a Canadian. I have had TN's and an L-1 while living in the USA (as an engineer). My situation is now different and not sure what is the best solution. B-1 or TN.

I am now living in Canada. I work on contract for several employers here in Canada. I teach workshops on the same topic in Canada now.

An American based company has approached me to give workshops in the US. It would mean travelling once a months to give a 4 day workshop. I would also do technical writing for them from Canada.

The TN I would get would be engineering, or technical writer. The workshops are eligible for PDU (professional development units), but are not at a college or university.

Can I ask for some advice? What work permit is best for this situation?

Thanks
Lane
