Is network systems analyst on the NAFTA list?

Postby whynot108 » Tue Dec 02, 2008 7:33 pm

Hi,

I am going to apply for TN visa. My job title in the letter of employment is network systems analyst. My duties at new job will include data network design, implementation and maintenance. I will mainly work on Cisco routers and switches. However I am not sure which occupation on the NAFTA list applies to me. Am I qualified for Computer Systems Analyst? The thing that makes me confused is in OOH Computer systems analyst and Network systems analyst are listed separately.

The following are my background.

* Canadian citizen
* Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from a Chinese university
* Master of Engineering in Internetworking, which is all about data network technologies, from a Canadian university
* 3 and half year experience as a data communications analyst with a Canadian university
* Certification: CCNA

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for response. I think I should buy the TN Expert Kit. I am wondering in my case which product I should go for, silver, gold or platinum? Thanks again!

Really the trick is basically the letter.

From the sounds of it you might be better off going in as a "technician". Systems analyst means exactly that, and the job is called that. From the sounds of it you're a network engineer which is not a systems analyst.

Oops. looks like I have to ask my new employer to modify the TN application letter. Or I'd better take my house off the market. ;) Luckily, I have not quit my current job yet.

Now I really want to clarify this. Whether network systems/data communications analyst is one of the approved professions listed in NAFTA Appendix 1603.D?

I am doing and will do almost exactly the same thing as described below.

********************************************************************************
(Extracted from the website of Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor)

15-1081 Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts

Analyze, design, test, and evaluate network systems, such as local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), Internet, intranet, and other data communications systems. Perform network modeling, analysis, and planning. Research and recommend network and data communications hardware and software. Include telecommunications specialists who deal with the interfacing of computer and communications equipment. May supervise computer programmers.

*********************************************************************************

I am not sure whether network systems/data communications analyst fits in the profession of Scientific Technician/Technologist on the NAFTA list either.

Thank you for your information! it is greatly helpful.

Both of your degrees are in Engineering so you are an Engineer not a Computer Systems Analyst.

If you are presenting your Chinese degree for admission, you will require an evaluation of it showing it is equivalent to a 4-year U.S. degree.
