I am living in NY with an 18 month J1 "training" visa. My education in Canada was a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education (Elementary School ed). I am "training" as a Marketing Coordinator of a textile company. I owned a Youth Theatre company and taught in Canada. How I got this visa was that I related "putting on a show" to working with tradeshows which is 65% of my job at the textile company. I also said that the marketing experience I receive will help me with my canadian theatre company as the principals are the same.

Trouble is, I now really like marketing, and since I left my theatre company, it is not doing well and is closing. I want to stay working here in NY ideally with this company. I tried to get a J2 extension - but I have the max time. Is there any other visa I can get in order to stay in the US?

if the company you are with is willing to sponsor you, and if you are eligible, you might try for a TN visa.

Do you think I could do it under "management consultant"? My education doesn't fit in with my job very well, but my experience does. I don't see "marketing" under the accepted TN jobs.

Thanks Reba

No idea. My expertise is not with TN Visas. AFAIK, for a TN if your profession is not listed, you're not eligible. Others here may have more information.
