j1-status and Canadian residency

Post Mon Jan 23, 2012 1:46 am

I am a Canadian citizen, and am a graduate student studying in the US on a J-1 status. Am I allowed to give up my Canadian residency (so as to avoid paying taxes on worldwide income in Canada)?

Extra Notes:
-My program lasts at least 5 years (and I will not be subject to the J-1 two-year home residency requirement upon graduation)
-My wife is with me and has a J-2 status. Same question: is she allowed to give up her Canadian residency?
-I would think that I am not allowed to give up Canadian residency, as a condition of the J-1 status. However, I cannot find anything official explicitly saying otherwise. If you know of any official(ish) webpages that say explicitly, I'd love to see them.

Thank you for any help you can give me!

Until you qualify for US tax residency, you cannot give up Cdn tax residency. Days spent in US on J status put simply "don't count" towards US rax residency.

follow-up where I told you on other thread.
