Jobs in England

Post Tue Jan 04, 2005 12:13 pm

Hello!

I am moving to England (hopefully) in August 2005. I am getting there through the SWAP exchange program. My question is, how difficult is it to find a job once I am there? I have a lot of administrative experience and some retail. I wouldn't be too picky about jobs (especially in the beginning) but I just want to have an idea of how long I can expect to be unemployed. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It really depends where you settle in the UK. The most plentiful opportunities are in the south-east, and within the south-east the best opportunities are in London. In these areas, if you have solid experience in the type of work you're applying for, you shouldn't have too much trouble, particuarly if you don't mind doing temporary agency work.

Opportunities elsewhere in the UK, particularly in fields such as admin and retail, are generally less plentiful, and less well paid.

Themeone,

Thanks for the reply. I am thinking of settling in Birmingham. I don't mind doing temporary work, I just wanted to get an idea of how long I should be able to support myself without any income. Do you know much about Birmingham?

No direct experience of working in Birmingham, but it's a big city, which always helps. Wages will be lower than London, that's for sure.

It's impossible to say how long you should plan to support yourself but, just on common sense, I'd say it would be unwise to come over if you can't support yourself for at least 4 weeks without working.

What do others think?

I quickly found jobs in Cheshire. Ever since I arrived, I never was without a job. The news papaers are full of aoofers and event better : apprenticeships where you get to learn a trade and get paid proper money for it.

I'm not in the health care industry myself but I can atleast give you a general pointing to for where you could start your search.

Try the NHS careers website, the NHS (National Health Service) is basically the British equivalent to Medicare in Canada. the pay may be or may not be the same as a private practise/hospital but it may be easier to find work near where you want to settle.

If you want to, you can also check to see if they have any links to private practises websites on their general page below.

You could also try the Job Centre Plus website, it's basically the equivalent of a suped up local Unemployment Office in Canada but they have a lot of their jobs posted online. Link below. good luck! :)
