Just Imported a car from the US and looking for PST/GST inf

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Just Imported a car from the US and looking for PST/GST inf

Hello

This is my situation. Im a duel citizen of Canada & the United States. I grew up most of my life in the United States and when to high school there. Then I went to University in Canada. So this winter break after returning from a vacation in the US I was stopped at the CND border and they said I had to import my vehicle. I received my car two years prior in the US and everything was registered in the US. Now that im living and working in Canada they want me to import the vehicle. When I imported the vehicle they made me pay the imports fees but also GST. Looking back on it I don't believe they should have charged me the GST because my vehicle was gifted to me 2 years ago and has been in my possession since. When I went into register the vehicle in Ontario I also had to pay a large amount of PST on. I talked to a supervisor at the Ontario vehicle registered office and she believed I would be able to get back GST and PST. Has any one ever experience this situation importing a vehicle into Ontario? Is there a way to avoid these taxes if you can prove you have owned the vehicle for a certain period of time?

No you cannot get the GST or PST back. The vehicle is imported into Canada and GST and Duty if made in a non nafta country apply. It does not matter how long you owned the car before or if it was a gift. With vehicles the value is based on the Canadian red book value. Sorry you are out of luck.
