I am a Canadian citizen currently working in the US on L1B. A few month ago, I got married with wife who's also a Canadian citizen. She still lives in Canada now, but we're trying to move her down to the US with me. After a bit of googling, it seems that getting her L2 status is fairly simple. She just needs to show up at a US POE with her passport, a copy of my I-94, and a marriage certificate, then the immigration officer will give her a I-94 with L2 status.
Now the marriage certificate wouldn't be a problem if we had gotten married in Canada. However, we had our wedding in our home country Taiwan and registered our marriage there. In Taiwan, the marriage certificate is just a piece of paper you buy from the bookstore that has signatures from the husband, the wife, and a witness. Since this document is in chinese, I assume the US immigration officer would want to see it translated in English.
Does anyone know if she can just show up with a home-made translation? Or does it have to be a notarized translation, which will be quite difficult for us to get since we're both working on this side of pacific. Any other option that I have?
Thanks!
