I was laid off last Friday. I'm on a TN and getting chemo here. Also, the company is paying out visa employee severance over several pay periods. 3 questions:

Severance -- Is my TN valid until the last cheque is diposited or am I out of status now? I am getting conflicting info.

I need to keep my med treatments up here (i.e., chemo this week) -- can I return as a visitor - my insurance goes until end of June and then there's COBRA.

To make the border run, I have state license plates on my car -- needed to for insurance. Will that be a big problem? Should I fly? I have lots of financial docs to show my ties to Canada, but want to spend the next several months as a visitor.

Thanks for your advice,
Kona

If you go to www.uscis.gov and search on "medical treatment", you'll find information about visitors visas that might fit your situation.

Yeah, you can actually stay in the US if you're getting life-saving treatment, there's even an IRS form to exempt you from paying US income taxes, Form 8843.

Thank-you to all who replied via the posting and my email. I'm going to try the I-539 and submit a letter from my oncologist, copies of recent appointments.

Anyone who has any more ideas, please continue to post -- I doubt that I am the only person who's been in this boat.
