I went alone, it's no problem, there are tons of people in the same boat, and you'll meet them in the hostels.

Hey fliprds - I didnt go alone but a fair amount of people do. You can meet people everywhere when your travelling, the hostals especially. People in general when travelling are in good spirits, little stress and looking to meet new people so that vibe is always out there. I know/see people become best friends in weeks as relationships while travelling seem to become more intense in a shorter period of time. Bottom line I know it would nerve racking, but there are thousands of people in the same shoes and you shouldnt have any problem meeting other like minding people.

CharR - Im about to turn 26 and a lot of my friends are buying houses now and im definately not ready to play "grown up". Last thing I want is a mortgage and other contracts to tie me down and keep me from going. All about experiences at this point in my life. Curious where your living now and how old you are now? Any closer to settling down now by the way?

Thanks Char and Shawn it's very good to hear that. It's easy to relate to how you feel, poeple buying houses and stuff, getting their career started and getting married, kids, etc. It's a good plan, just not for everyone... Australia looks like it has just about everything someone adventurous would look for, I guess it's just about actually doing it!

I guess were all part of the "not ready to play grown up" club!!

I'm 28 now, I live in a rental house in the northern suburbs of Melbourne with my boyfriend and some friends.

So I guess, yah, I'm a little closer to settling down, but I'm not fully tied into anything, and my partner and I have plans to move out of Australia in 2 years when he's done school, maybe back to Canada somewhere, maybe somewhere else like London or the US. So I don't see myself settling down and staying somewhere permanently any time too soon!

Definitely a member of the not ready to be a grown up club and proud of it! :-D Although, I guess there are many ways to be a grown up that don't have to involve staying put in one place. Seeing the world is a life experience that many of your friends will be very jealous they never got when you're looking back in 30 years! I guess one thing I've done to make sure I'm being a bit responsible is to employ a great accountant to make sure that any retirement savings I'm accumulating through my various jobs, is put to good use so that one day, no matter what country I'm in, I'll have the money to retire. (and do even MORE traveling!)

Do it!!!!!!!! Get on a plane asap!

I've been here for 2 months and I'm loving it! I'm 30, turning 31 this coming December. You definitely won't regret it - this has been the time of my life so far! :)

Hi!

I'm staying at Base Backpackers on Kent St and I've been here almost a month now - love it! I've met so many new friends here!

I was initially worried about coming to a hostel, I'm not really travelling as a "backpacker" (I've got two big suitcases - lol!) and I'm travelling alone, but I am having the time of my life here! The hostel is really clean and fun and everyone here rocks!

Hi Martinigirl,

I looked up the hostel you are staying at and it looks really nice! Are you staying in a private or dorm room? I'm going to be coming around mid Jan and I'm trying to figure out what hostel to stay at. I'm in my late 20's and I would prefer to stay in a place where the guests are in and around the same age bracket. What's the avg age of the people staying there?
