Leaving a Car in the US

Post Sun Jan 24, 2010 11:08 am

Hi - We are Albertans who recently bought a home in Phoenix.
We would like to have a car there to use when we are in Phoenix on vacation. Our vacations are going to be short at this point so we are not driving each time (we are not staying the whole winter in Phoenix, just taking short trips every few months). We will be flying back and forth and leaving the car in Phoenix.
Does anyone know how this can be done? I understand we can't buy a car in the states and leave it there as we don't have a US drivers licence, SSN etc and wouldn't want them either as there are tax implications.
It seems more likely that we could take one of our Canadian cars down there but our insurance company says we can't do that unless we bring the car back every 3 months or so which is impossible.
Does anyone have any experience they can share.
Thanks in advance.

You can buy a car in US and leave it there.

We looked into that possibility too but we can't get US insurance and registration.

I'm quite sure you could register the car. Insurance may be more difficult and expensive, but possible.

There are no tax consequences to getting a US DL, btw. Not having an SSN may be a block to that however, since 9-11.

In FL for example, all this is possible for Cdns snowbirds, and is done quite regualrly. AZ is a little less Cdn-friendly I guess.

You won't have a problem. I bought a truck in Phoenix in April 2010 for my holiday home in Phoenix. Took it to the DMV, registered it - gave them my BC drivers license - no problems at all. I phoned the DOT later to make sure I did everything right. They said yes. They said I can drive it to Mexico or wherever (I am insured with progessive.com because they accept foreign licenses). Excellent rate. The only place I can't go is Canada with it, because Canada does not allow residents to drive foreign plated vehicles.
