Leaving Aus after almost 6 years in Adelaide

Post Sat Feb 12, 2011 5:27 pm

After 5 and half years of marriage, me and the wife are separating, I've decided I want to go back to Canada, how do I go about collecting my superannuation as I want to use this money to pay off some debts here. I'm a permanent resident here but not a citizen, do I need to renounce my status in order to get my superfund? Has anyone here done something similar?

If you were a temporary resident, you could access it. As a permanent resident you cannot until you reach 60. You can't even transfer it. However, you should contact the ATO to clarify if you can access it upon canceling your PR status; I believe this is possible.
