I am one of the newbees here and I am thankful about the this forum.

My work in the US starts in October. Given that, ideally, when is the best to leave Canada and apply for a TN visa?

I would like to fly and leave Canada a week before my work officially starts. I am also applying for a TN Visa on the same day of my flight.

Will I have any issues on that?

I would need extra days to apply for Social Insurance, open a bank account, and other activities that need to be done before I officially start my work.

Many Thanks for all the replies

Enter 1 week before your job start should be enough.

You can apply for SSN and open bank account after you start your work.

If you are close enough to the border to drive and apply I would suggest driving to the border, applying and going home, than flying to your ultimate destination so that so that if there is an issue with your application you aren't stuck at the airport.but that is just my paranoia Very Happy

Getting an SSN is pretty easy once you have your paperwork, should only take a couple hours, depending on the lines at the SSA.

I've been offered a position in the US starting in October. I am thinking of driving to the border and getting my TN stamped, coming back home and then leave for the US in 3 weeks time. I just want to do so that I resign from my current job only after getting the TN stamped.

Do you guys think it is ok to get the TN stamped 3 weeks before the actual joining date?

I had mine stamped on 26 April, and had my start date on 14 May, crossing over on 10 May (a 5 day drive from Sudbury to Nevada). Some guards will stamp it and post date your TN until your start date, but some won't. The worst case scenario is your TN will be dated on the day that you get it stamped, so you will have to leave/renew it 3 weeks earlier than you originally had planned.

Thanks for your supersonic reply.

Since my job is going to be on the East coast of the US and I live in Vancouver, I would like to go to the border post near Vancouver. I don't mind losing 3 weeks but I just don't want to resign from my current job without getting the TN visa.

Is there anything I should be aware of while applying at the border post near Vancouver.
