Leaving Canada for 1 year - what to do with house

Post Tue Mar 31, 2009 12:36 pm

Hi everyone. I just found this forum and joined today.

I'm considering going to the Czech Republic with my girlfrined for a year. My girlfriend is from there but right now is in Canada with me until the end of this year.
I was born in the Czech Republic, have a Czech passport and speak the language (not perfectly) so that shouldn't be a problem at all.

My concern is that I have a house, a mortgage, and all of my things here. I think it would be foolish to sell the house so I guess I would have to rent it out. But what about all of the stuff in it? The furniture, etc? What do I do with it all? If I didn't have anything it would be so much easier to just get up and go.

I was hoping that someone could comment on how they dealt with this type of situation. Any help at all would be appreciated. I don't know where to start.

Cheers,
Tom

Put it in storage if you don't want to keep it in the house, rent a unit from public storage. Or hire a management company to look after the house.

rent it out fully furnished. Put any valuables in locked storage. But be prepared and know that people don't tend to take the same care with someone else's furniture as they would their own.

My grandmother rented out her condo for a year fully furnished a while back. It wasn't a total disaster.

Hi there

We lucked out and rented out our house to a friend. If there is any possibility of this it might be your cheapest and best option. You will have someone paying rent and watching your house. For the most part you can move all of your items into one room or a basement if you have one. If there is anything of great value ask a family member to keep it. I think public storage is a good option too but it can be pricey. Depends on your available resources. We left out kitchen in tact so the renter is using our dishes, pots and pans, etc..so its not like we needed to pack up the entire house. Good Luck!
