Leaving Canadian car in Florida

Post Wed Jun 09, 2010 8:39 pm

We own a condo in Florida and live in Ontario. We have left our van in Florida with ontario plates and ontario insurance. We frequently visit florida during the winter for short trips, less than two weeks at a time. Would it be best to leave the ontario plates on? Do we still need to get an emissions test done when due? As we are not in Florida for more than 90 days a year is it legal to keep our ONtario plates?

You cannot leave the car in US for more that one year on Ontario plates. Temporary importation (which is what you have doe, as a tourist, is only allowed for one year -- 365 days. You would need to formally import the car into US, and plate and insure it in FL.

Where YOU are is immaterial. The CAR is in US for long periods.
