Hello Everyone, Thank you for reading my post.

I'm here in the UK on a Work-Sponsored Visa.

I'm thinking of going freelance and want to apply for a UK ancestry visa.

I don't want to screw up my current situation and thought a lawyer would be best. http://www.breytenbachs.com has been the most helpful so far.

However the UK fees for Visa are 150 GBP and takes up to 13 weeks or 400 GBP and they do it the same day.

Plus, they only accept originals documents. Imagine sending all those birth certificates and my passport in the mail!??!?!

Lawyer fees are on top of that.

So I thought, why not do this through the British Embassy in Canada, where the fee is only $180 and takes 10 days.

So my questions are:

(1) Has anyone else ever done this while already being in the UK? What was your experience?

(2) Does anyone know any good Canadian Lawyers that do this sort of thing? Or is a lawyer even necessary?

(3) Any other related advice?

Many Thanks,
Mj62

Actually the British Embassy in Canada has gotten back to me to say that they can only process applications for those current living in Canada.

Did they tell you that they only process applications for Canadians in Canada because it's apparently illegal to mail your passport across the ocean? Who knew?! I found out that one the hard way! I mailed them my passport for processing while I was working in Ireland - they were none too happy with me!

They weren't going to send it back to me (That old Catch 22 - it's illegal for them to mail it back to me across the ocean - oops!). A few tears, and a very sympathetic member of the Colsular staff are the only thing that got me my passport back! They mailed it to my parents in Ontario because as he said "What they choose to do with it is out of my control, as long as I know nothing about it".

Are you planning a trip home to Canada any time soon? My application was processed in less than a week, and that was around the Christmas holidays.

Best of luck!
