Life in New Zealand

Post Mon Apr 14, 2008 8:41 pm

Hi Guys;

If you would like some up-to-date info on lifestyle issues in NZ then I may be able to assist.
NZ is increasingly attractive to folk from around the globe but there are many instances of folk not doing their homework prior to making their decision to come here and subsequently finding that there are issues here of which they are either unaware or cannot live with.
I undertake to give an unbiased account of matters that you may care to raise.

Working on it

We are exploring a job opportunity in NZ. We live in the UK and, if we move to NZ, we will move directly from the UK. NZ is very attractive to us for a number of reasons and we appreciate your offer to provide advice. As we proceed you will most likely hear from us.

Moving to Auckland from Nova Scotia. Waiting for immigration to apply as skilled migrant is a slow process. Now have an invite just waiting for it to come in the mail. If any one has been through the process would love to hear from them.

Hi FromNS,

Sorry I am unable to provide info on immigration matters for you - but I suspect it may take some time.

If I can be of any other assistance - let me know. :P

Hi Dannnykool;
Re: issues where you can help

1. racism
2. work and other
3. weather
4. web sites

You probably already are aware that NZ is a multicultural country. Auckland in particular. Manukau ikty just a few miles from Central Auckland has the largest population of Pacific Island people. NZ is increasingly the home to Indian,Chinese,Vietnamese,and a host of other nationalities. In general terms Racism is unwelcome but it does raise it's head from time to time. We have a much better attitude of tolerance and acceptance of "differences" than most other countries.

As to the work environment. At present the labour market is short of people in most professions as well as semi skilled and unskilled folk. We currently experience the sight of our best and brightest moving offshore in search of whatever - but mostly financial.
The basic working week is of 40 hours but this can be very flexible. A minimum of 4 weeks paid annual leave and numerous paid "Statutory Holidays" are also built into our labour legislation.

As to our weather - we have just come to the end of a glorious summer and for the next few months (until about December) we can expect cool weather,rain and the occasional storm. The further South you move from Auckland the cooler (and colder) it get's.
I guess the experts would call it a "temperate" climate. But whatever it's called - it's fine.

As to web sites - I take it that you would be interested in sites that inform and describe NZ.

There are a host of such sites and a "Google" search for the particular area of your interest would provide you with good info. A search for a particular city is suggested:
Auckland,Wellington,Bay of Plenty,Christchurch,Bay of Islands. would be a good start.

Hope this is helpful.
