Life insurance

Postby LAYDY » Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:18 pm

Hi,

I am planning on moving to the Uk and settle with a fiance visa (6 months). Once my boyfriend and I will get married, I will apply for the "further leave to remain".

I was wondering as I bought a one way ticket what should I do with my insurance? I know I need to get one. I've always purchased an insurance whenever I went travelling but now that Im going to "settle" in the Uk. Is the "travel" insurance purchased in Canada valid for me?

For 6 months I will not be a british citizen and even after I still dont know if I could get insurance there.

Is there anyone who knows what insurance company would be good?

Im a bit confuse! Hopefully someone can help me to clear that out very soon!

Thank you!

Hello,

I am not sure what kind of insurance you are looking for.?
Is it a life insurance, travel insurance or health insurance that you are looking for?

For a life insurance you will probably will have to find a company that deals with this (here in the UK).
For a travel insurance, if it is to cover your travels after you arrive in the UK , I would think that you will have to find one here because at that point ,you will be a uk resident (you will need one to go back to Canada because once you leave the country, after a few months, you are not covered anymore by the health system) .
If you are taking about a health insurance once you are here, you don't need any because uk residents are covered by the NHS (health system here), and this is free (well you pay once you work with taxes).

Hope this helps

Thank you for your quick reply! I really appreciate it!

What you are telling me makes a lot of sens. It is a lot clearer now. The only thing that I still wonder is if with my fiance visa I will be considered like a Uk resident? As for 6 months im not allow to work or use the NHS for free. I read that its only once im married that I can apply for the 2 years probationary period before the indefinate leave to remain. So I wonder If before my wedding I would be considered like a Uk resident.

So the question comes back again, should I buy a travel insurance in Canada before I go to the Uk for 6 months? Or should I, once in the Uk, get myself a life insurance straight away?

Hi again,

As far as I know you will be covered by the NHS with your fiancee visa, I know that people who come here on a Working Holiday visa are covered and they can only stay for up to 2 years with this type of visa.
With your fiancee visa you will be a UK resident because you will be living here (to settle)so that is why I am 90% sure that you can use the NHS without paying.
All you need to do is register with a local GP when you arrive in the UK.
If you want to make sure maybe contact the Home Office and ask them?

You could probably purchase a travel insurance from Canada if you want to cover that one trip to the UK only (for things like luggages, delayed flights, etc.) but once you are here you will have to get travel insurance if you want to travel to other countries or back to Canada.
