Living in Canada and working for USA company remotely

I need to know if I actually need a TN Visa to work remotely (from Alberta) and if I do can I go to any port-of-entry and renew the existing TN without going to work in the US.

Steve,

You seem to be the man in the know - I have my own private company and have just landed a contract in Houston. I will be workin in Houston for 3 weeks or so and then travelling off shore into the Gulf of Mexico for 2 weeks and then 1 week back in Canada - what do I need?

I thank you for all your help

It depends on the nature and type of work you're doing, like I said in the post above. You sound like you're working in the oil industry so you probably need a TN-1, which is the easiest work authorization to get (especially if your principal residence is still in Canada), assuming you have the relevant qualifications and your occupation falls into one of the NAFTA categories.
