Living in Mexico city

Living in Mexico city

Postby mikeinmex » Thu Oct 02, 2008 6:37 am

My name is Michael i am a Canadian living in Mexico city. I have to say that I hate it, i have never seen such an agressive and uneducated people. Driving to work every day is like driving through hell. Every time i get to work i thank god that i have not crashed.
The people of Mexico city are the most neurotic people in world(in my opinion).
In this city ignorance is bliss, you should be nore afraid of the law than the actual criminals.
The funny thing is, they wonder why they are seen as a third world country.
Well for example vendors can cook food on principal streets where the meat is seasoned with all the wonderful pollution and dirt that the city has to offer.
Any Canadians thinking of living here, i suggest you find another option. The wild west and cavemen were more organized and sofistacted than the people of this city.

Whoa Michael: Even if these are your considered views, be careful. Once you have exposed yourself on the internet, you are public property forever. And your colleagues and neighbours in Mexico can google you and find it.

It is becoming well understood in Canada, after several recent incidents, that visitors to Mexico can sometimes be subject to arbitrary and unjust law enforcement as well as crime itself, but making the generalizations you do is almost certainly unjustified. John

Hello John, I understand that you might think that what i have said is a little agressive, but unless you live hear and see the chaos that is Mexico city you would understand.
I am not saying that the whole country is like this and that all the people are this way, but the people from the city and trust me when i say i know from experience are neurotic.

18 million people all trying to get to work and school at the same time. they don't have the option to live in a Canadian city.
If you don't like it go home and stop crying.
I love Mexico City I use to cross the city from the south to north daily for 3 years, some times driving and other times using the metro. I then moved within walking distance to work and enjoy my time.
I was in Toronto at the begining of the summer and it's not that much better considering the population.
Did you not understand what you had to deal with before moving here, you should have spent some time here before jumping in.
This is Mexico City it will not change for you, you have to adjust or get out before you have a life changing confrontation.
Good luck with your anger, and now you know when those foreigners back home say "In my country" that frase that makes us all say "if your not liking it go home".
To any Canadians thinking of moving here do your home work first. Mexico City is a great place to live, the culture, food, music and people are all wonderfull. In Mexico City you are never far from the beach, ruins, mountains, camping, fishing, biking and other great Mexican City's and town's full of adventure, you just have to wake up early and beat that traffic.

Hi Michael,

As some of the other commenters have mentioned you clearly are unhappy here in Mexico.

As a student of human nature, I always find it amazing that two people can have the same experience but very different perceptions of that experience.

To me it’s sad that you are in a place and situation that you clearly you do not like. The only thing that would make this a tragedy is that you stay in a place (Mexico City) that isn’t working for you.

Hope you find what you are looking for

Wow, sounds like you're having a tough time in Mexico City. It's not a place that everyone likes and other posters have some good advice, namely, go home if you don't like it.

I'm from Ottawa and have been living in DF for 8 years now. I can't imagine living anywhere else now.love this city lots. It's a huge city, so one has to deal with big city issues, especially traffic. For that, I've never bought a car. I find the subway and my bicycle get me everywhere much faster. I take my two dogs to one of three enormous parks near me every weekend.

Given how many people there are living in sprawling Mexico City, you're bound to meet all kinds. I find drivers aggressive here.much like Montreal actually. I also find people extraordinarily friendly. One of the great joys here is - once you learn the language (something maybe missing for you Michael?) - is how interesting people are, especially towards Canadians. I can't leave the house without getting into some kind of great conversation about a wide variety of topics, be it in a taxi, on the metro, in a park, at the corner store.

Anyway, everyone has their opinion of a place and is entitled to it. There's good and bad to everywhere you go, but like anywhere, life is going to be what you make of it. My Canadian girlfriend and I are expecting a baby and just about to buy a home here. We both feel this is a great place to live and raise a family.

No people or society is so bad or backward as you think. Some particular incidents hurting your feelings may have cropped up these feelings. Actually, if you have to live there, yo will have to adjust and change yourself. Much depends upon- how you see the things like half filled or half empty. Start visualizing the surroundings with ‘half filled’ attitude and try to fill it up. You will start enjoying your stay.

Sun Media interview request

Postby songviv » Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:51 am

Hi everyone,
My name is Vivian Song and I'm a national reporter for Sun Media in Toronto. I'm following up on the swine flu outbreak and am hoping to speak to some Canadian expats living in Mexico City and surrounding area who can tell us what's going on down there.
Is it overblown, like the SARS outbreak in Toronto, or is panic widespread etc.?
If you call me at 416-947-2341, I'll call you back on my dime. I'm working to deadline so am hoping to speak to someone ASAP.
Email is vivian.song@sunmedia.ca.
Look forward,
Vivian
