Hi Wendy,
That's too bad that you aren't enjoying your new home area. I have an Uncle who married a lady from NI and they have lived there since... well, as long as I can remember. He still complains about the price of stuff and the political issues etc. But all in all, he's pretty happy there.
Have you tried getting to know the locals in your area? Or are they part of the "problem"? Here in Vienna many people don't "know" there own neighbours. Natives seem to live in their own little world here. The expats have their own circle and the immigrants too create their own pocket in the city.
I found that when I moved from Ontario to Vienna, Austria, one of the biggest drawbacks to my new home was that I didn't speak the language. Thanfully there is a english-speaking group of ladies here (AWA Vienna) that I joined and met others in a similar situation. I'm still not fluent but I can get around and get my point across.
Sorry, I guess I didn't really offer too much help or advice. Perhaps you can research the information/tourist office and see if they have any connections to expat stuff.
