Living in the Gap in Brisbane

Post Sat Jun 30, 2007 3:24 pm

Hello, we moved to Brisbane from Calgary in August of last year and still are having problems meeting people. We have two young girls (3 1/2 years old) and I have joined a Mom and Tots group and the girls go to daycare 2 times a week as well. If there are any other Canadian Moms out there that live close to The Gap, let me know and maybe we could get together for some playdates with the kids.

Hi Karen
Are you having problems meeting Aussies as well - or just finding other Canadians?

Cheers

We are over here on a 3 year contract and it seems when ever I tell anyone that, they don't seem too responsive to making any kind of friendship. It could just be me, but the two people I have made friends with are from Vancouver, BC and London England. Sometimes it is nice to have someone else far from home to commiserate with. Where are you from? and are you here to stay? and how do you find the Australians?

Hi Karen
I'm from Halifax, NS originally, lived in England for 10 years and moved here in 2000.

I love the Australians, their attitude towards life and their laid back style. My husband is Australian so perhaps that makes it easier for me to mix - but have had no problems meeting new friends.

The problem I found when I first arrived was that Australians thought I was American, and alot of Australians are put off by what they (percieve to be) the US arrogance.

I found if I introduced myself as being Canadian, it helped.

Have you considered taking an evening class, or joining a gym - something to get you mixing with more people?

Cheers,
Troppo

Hi there,

We just moved here a month ago, but we're in Wellington Point so we're probably a little too far away. If you want to meet at Southbank (or somewhere in the middle) sometime then I'd be up for that.

I have a daughter who is 3.5 year and a son who is 10 months old. I'm at home all the time and have a car to get around. We're also only here for a couple of years, although we have a visa to stay as long as we like. We moved here from Fort McMurray so my husband could get a job in mining.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hello. Have you tried the message boards for Essential Baby and Bub Hub? Just a thought. There's also public libraries when they do toddler time reading.

I forgot to ask.how do you like The Gap? We only have our rental until September so we have to find buy a house by then, only we haven't decided on an area yet.

The gap might be a little expensive for us. We're only hoping to spend about $400-450,000 for a 3-4 bedroom house. So I was thinking we'd have to be a little farther out.

Do you have any suburbs that you like?

Hi Haley,
We love The Gap, it has everything you need within either walking distance or a 5 minute drive. There are a lot of Daycares/Kindy/Private & State Schools in this area and a nice Shopping Village with a Food Store (Coles),Drug Store, Butcher, Bakery and a Medical Facility and Dentist. My husband works just outside of the CBD (Central Business District or as us Canadians call it Downtown Brisbane)in a suburb called Milton. It only takes him about 15 - 20 minutes to get to work in the morning. If you go on the website ourbribane you will find a realestate section that shows that there are several places for sale that are under the 450,000 price. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me (33006469). Cheers, Karen.

yep, ggrrrr can't post link because of filter but it is real estate dot come dot au. No spaces. It's the most popular australia wide.

click on rental or buy on the top tabs, and the area you are looking in, then fine tune it in the advanced search. Great site and have found all my rentals through them. SIL just bought a house in Pacific Pines listed on there too. Good luck!
