Living in the US

Post Mon Nov 07, 2011 9:47 am

I have heard that the laws may be changing with regard to Canadians living in the US. Currently, we can go there for 6 months per year. Has anyone heard that this may be changing to 12 months a year?

There is upcoming legislation that if passed will give ALL persons, not just Cdns, the right to live in US for 3 years at a time, but only if they buy $500,000 worth of real estate.

For Cdns over 50 years old specifically, they will allow those who own US property or rent a US property, to stay 240 days instead of the 180 day maximum currently.

Of course, those who do this will likely lose there medical coveragee in Canada, and MUST STILL MAINTAIN FULL RESIDENCE IN CANADA at all times.

Wow, that's pretty good to know, although I'm not exactly in a position right now to be able to by a property worth half a million dollars... I'm buying a lottery ticket later though, so maybe in a few days I'll consider it!
