Living Outside of Canada

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Living Outside of Canada

Post Fri Apr 30, 2010 8:04 pm

My husband and I just purchased a home in Aruba and plan on moving there within the next year. Do we have to contact the Cdn Govt to inform them of this. Also will OHIP cover our medical expenses should we need to return to Canada at some point.
We will both be receiving pensions which will go into a Cdn Bank acct and then transferred to the island each month and since we will need to fill out Cdn Tax forms each year will we still be covered for our health care. We plan to live in Aruba year round. If we need to inform the Government of our move, who do we contact

Once you leave canada permanently, you will no longer be covered by OHIP.

Even if you were to maintain some residential ties in Canada, once you are gone for more than 7 months you are in eligible for OHIP.

So you will need your own medical covergae.

Because aruba doe not have a tax treaty with canada, you will remain taxable in canada on your world income unless you get rid of ALL Cdn ties (except passport). Even if you weren't your pension income would still be taxable at 15% flat.

But merely reporting and paying Cdn tax does not keep OHIP viable.
You need to make sure you cancel any GST rebates you are getting as soon as you leave.

Most people in your situation simply 'visit' a foreign country for 5-7 months, coming back to their permanent home in Canada to preserve their OHIP, GST, drivers license etc.
