London Budget

Post Wed May 11, 2011 9:46 am

I am moving to the uk for an internship. I've been working on a budget to decide what I can afford in terms of rent. I would like to have a one bedroom apartment with space to put up family and friends when they come to visit (a living room/reception). I will be working in Fulham (close to Imperial Wharf). I would like to not have to commute too far to work. Do these numbers seem reasonable?

Rent: £1200/month
Utilities/Council Tax: £200/month
Phone & Internet: £60 /month
Transportation: £150 /month

Thanks!

Yes, those figures look reasonable to me. It's possible you are slightly overestimating the costs and will be able to get by for a bit less than that. But it's good to overestimate when budgeting. You might find that your one-bedroom flat is smaller than what you are used to, but there's usually still room to put friends and family up in the living room.

Hi mwalker,
The below seems about right, rent would get you a 1 bedroom at most is my guess, but as mentioned the living-room can serve you as a guest room and save you money so you can get out and enjoy what London has to offer.

I found this calculator handy when deciding my budget in the UK. http://www.i-resign.com/uk/financialcen ... ulator.asp
