Looking to move to NYC

Post Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:43 am

Hello all,
I'm looking to move to NYC for training reasons. However its not typical work training. I'm a computer technician/graphic artist moving into tattooing. The reason for moving is there are no willing mentors around here, and NYC tattoo scene seems to be booming. I have contacted a few shops down there, and some are willing to teach, some are not. Now here's the kicker.
The apprenticeship is NOT paid. I should also add that its not a "formal" apprenticeship either, like a welder. But since it is over a matter of years, I'm going to need to work. I've looked at the NAFTA TN list over and over. And I don't think I fit. I'm personally lost in this area. Is there another route I can take other than a TN?

Thanks

Nick

You said you will need to work while in the U.S. Are you willing to work as a Graphic Designer, since this is a NAFTA Occupation.

Your 'apprenticeship' can be considered to be a hobby.

The potential for me to be working as a graphic artist is definately there. However, I do not have a degree in it. Being self taught doesn't count as much anymore.
I also forgot to mention that I'm a Level 1 Pyrotechnician (fireworks). I'm not sure that makes much of a difference. But it just might :)
