I must say, after searching many government websites, this forum has given us much more information on moving to the usa.
Here is our situation. We would like to buy a home and live in Georgia (Golden Isles area) for a one or two year period. My husband works for a major usa corp with many regional offices throughout Canada. He has teleworker status, which means he works from home permanantly through internet and phone. He basically can work from anywhere in North America. His company will not transfer him to Georgia, but technically he can work from there. If we are able to go, my four school age children would have to go to school. I don't need to work but I do have a college diploma and I am half way through a university degree through distance education. My husband has a two year college diploma. If we go, we will be back to Canada for holidays and summer. Here are my many questions:
1. Do we only need nonimmigrant (TN) visas for everyone? If all the paperwork is in order, is this difficult?
2. Does my husband need a letter from his company saying that he is employed. Even though he is not being transferred.
3. If we sell any property we buy in Georgia, are we taxed on any capital gains we may make on the property?
4. Are property taxes higher for non-residents in Georgia?
5. Can we enroll our children in school in Georgia?
6. Do we pay income taxes to Canada only or to both Canada and USA.
7. Since we will only be gone 1 to 2 years, do we keep our car registered and insured in Ontario?
Thank you so much for any information that you can provide. I will probably have more questions.
Joy
