Lost in Visa Land

Post Tue Aug 16, 2011 12:48 pm

Hey everyone,

I've been reading the forums since back in the canucks.co.uk days and finally decided to take the plunge and move to the UK. My question relates to VISA's as i'm sure that most peoples questions do. My wife qualifies for the Ancestry Visa as her grandfather was born in the UK however i'm a generation too far away to qualify for this visa on my own. Is there a dependent Visa that I can apply for? If so would there be a problem with myself being the sole provider or atleast the majority provider for the house? We're both under 30 so i've thought about doing the YMS visa instead but i thought it might look better to employers if i have a Ancestry Visa versus YMS. My specific questions are as follows:

1) the funds required for the Ancestry Visa, do they require 6 months of bank statements or is it just your balance within 30 days of application, similar to the YMS applications? would 3200 GBP be fine for both?

2) If there is a dependent visa do we apply at the same time for the ancestry or in 1 package ?

3) Is it possible to apply for the ancestry visa once in the UK? i.e. for now we go over on the YMS visa and then in a year or so we apply for the ancestry visa to stay longer?

Thanks!
Andrew

As a Canadian citizen under 30 years old, you could either apply as UK Ancestry dependent or Tier 5 YMS. The advantage of UK Ancestry dependent is the length of the visa, which is 5 years instead of 2 for YMS.

1) You'll need to show 6 months of bank statements and a balance of 3,200 GBP should be fine for both of you.
2) If you choose the dependent option, you'll save time and money by applying at the same time as your wife.
3) No, you need entry clearance (visa). You can't switch from YMS to any other category from within the UK.

We hope that helps!

for the bank statements, I'm assuming we can't show more than 6 months worth of investments well over the 3200gbp and then show the movement from investments being moved to cash?
