making the move

Post Mon Mar 17, 2008 4:09 am

Hey guys,
I am an expat living in Britain who is considering making the move to Germany. Basically I have been around Germany and thought it would be a nice place to live for a bit before heading back to Canada. I have a few questions though.

1) what kind of work can an "aus lander" get-bearing in mind my German is not great (I will take lessons though). I usually do factory work in the UK but have done some office work as well.

2) Do the Germans have mandatory ID cards and will I need one?

3)What are rents like in Berlin as thats mainly where I want to live.
Thanks
Ben

As for the work I'm not sure I can help you for factory work. but for the rest.

No you don't need any ID except your passport

And the rents in Berlin depends on the Neighbourhood and the size of the apartment of course. I would say anything between 350€ and 800€ for something reasonably nice for 1 to 3 rooms in different neighbourhoods. if you have more details about what you want just tell me :)

Well work depends on your qualifications.
If you're interested in factory work or "blue collar" jobs, then I don't think it will make much of a difference if you don't speak fluent german, but you should know enough to make basic conversation.

Good point. I would say I know enough German to make basic basic conversation. Y'know like-hello, how are you, I am well the weather is nice etc. And I can know enough to go shopping by myself.
How would I go about looking for work in Germany though?
