Manitoba Health: Coverage in the UK?

Post Mon Apr 19, 2010 10:41 am

Hello, I'm a Manitoba resident and am planning on visiting the UK soon for 6months. I read on the MB Health website that MB Health covers you for three months out of the country and that you can extend this coverage for up to 6months. But does anyone know what exactly they cover? Here is what is written on the website:

If you are admitted on an emergency basis to a hospital outside of Canada, Manitoba Health will pay for the services you need based on established daily rates. If you are seen in a hospital outpatient or emergency department, coverage is limited to a maximum of $100 CDN per visit. Physician services are covered at the same rates paid to Manitoba doctors.

So, does anyone know what the daily rates are? Since CA and the UK are so similar in health care, would MB Health cover most of it?

I would appreciate any advice if anyone out there has had any experience with this.

If you are there strictly as a visitor for less than 6 months and you need to go to a surgery (what they call a clinic), you let them know you're from Canada and they'll give you a form to fill out which states you're a temporary resident and you'll receive free care. You're health card from Canada won't be asked for. I don't know about emergency services (ie: hospital) but the other is easy.
