Marriage in Canada (UK/Canadian Citizens)

Post Tue May 12, 2009 6:30 am

I'm a Canadian & British citizen, my boyfriend is British. We are both residents in the UK. We are getting married in Canada in September 2009.

Does anyone know if we can just go there and do a regular ceremony or do we need to complete a 'Request for an attestation of an event in the registry' which I think is the equivalent of the 'Certificate of No Impediment to marriage'?

I've called the Leeds City Council who told me to contact the Canadian High Commission, who told me to consult their website, which stated to contact the High Commission. Somewhere along the line I called 'Etat Civil' office in Montreal who sent me the 'Request for an attestation of an event in the registry' application form but they were not sure I even needed it to get married...

Any British Canadians in the same boat? Or for that matter, are there any British residents who got married in Canada, what did you so?

thanks.

Not sure if this will help but I’m Canadian living in UK (married Scottish boy in UK) about 3 years ago I applied for an Officiant Number for the “minsitère de la justice” in order to legally marry my best friend (Canadian) and her boyfriend (UK) in Canada.

The paper work was really straight forward. As far as I remember all I needed was his birth certificate and we didn’t present a “Certificat of non impediment” because in Canada le “régistre de l’État civil”does not give out such certificates.

Hope this helps. Email me if you have other questions. I might be able to find the documents that the Ministère de la justice sent me and forward them on to you - could give you a better idea of stuff that needs to be done.

Have a great day, Zoé

Am a Canadian citizen (boy) married a UK passport girl. We got married in London but could not register the marriage there, but registered in India. We lived in the USA for 5 years and applied by mail to the Bristish Consulate by post for a UK Settlement visa (for me, the spouse). With proper documents and filled forms, the visa came stamped on my Canadian passport within 1 week from Los Angeles Consulate. Also went for a biometrics appointment (fingerprinting) in Texas.
The settlement visa is valid for 2 years during which one must apply for extension or citizenship meeting residency requirements.
Hope that helps.

Hi

I have read countless forums some of use some not, basically my situation is, Im British my girlfriend is Canadian, she was here last year on a holiday visa she is now here on a working holiday visa, we have been together 18 months, although she went back for 2 1/2/months to change her visa. From what I can see unless you have lived together for 2 years and can prove this, or you can sponsor her there is no way she can stay in the uk unless we get married, and I believe you still have to prove it is not a sham marriage and she may have to go back first to get a fiancee' visa So unless she gets sponsored by me or a job, she will have leave in 5 months. Is this correct? would appreciate any input

Thank you

I'm a permanent resident of Canada but not a Canadian citizen. I'm currently in UK on a 6 months visit/tourist visa visiting my boyfriend who is a Temporary residence of Uk but not a Biritish citizen. We're planning to get married next year here in UK. But it's not easy said t done. We've learned that i have to go back to Canada to apply for a fiancee visa, come back and get married here in UK. So, here are my questions:
Q1-Do i have to go back to canada to apply fiance visa or i can get married visa/tourist?
Q3-How long does the processing takes to get a fiancee visa?
Q4-After we get married i have to apply for a marriage visa which permits me to stay for 2 years, do i have to go back to Canada to apply for this or the application can be done here in UK?

I really need some answers quickly and badly. Any help, info, advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks You
YYzz
