Married while on YMV & want to change to UK Spouse Visa

Post Wed Nov 09, 2011 9:33 am

Hi,
I have a few questions about the process that I need to do to change from YMV to a UK Spouse visa.

I am Canadian currently on a YMV that runs out April 1st 2012. My ( UK resident )husband and I were married in Scotland August 5th 2011 (we have been a couple for 5 years ).

So here are my questions
1. Do I need to change my last name in my Canadian passport to my married name before applying for my spousal visa and does that include changing my name on my YMV?
2. How soon can I apply for a spousal visa?
3. Is there anything else to this process that I need to complete before applying?

Please help!!

Hi! I'll just tell you that I did not change my name on my Canadian passport. Just supply your marriage cert. to show name change. I think you can apply any time. There are 2 categories: those who have been a couple for 4 years, and those who have been a couple for less (doesn't really matter if you're married). Since you have been together for more than 4 years, you will apply to that category. Hmm, not sure what else. Haven't done this one, yet.

HI,
Thanks for the advice I guess the other factor that I should have added is that my current passport runs out in August 2012. Is it difficult to change your name after you have a Spoue Visa?

I am torn as to what I should do.

Hi again.

You can go with whatever name you like. Doesn't matter. Didn't anyone explain this to you?

The reason you send a marriage cert is to show legal name change. Fill the form out using the name you want on your documents.

For example, you have a visa with a different name. Doesn't matter... Just fill out your passport application using the name you want to appear. There is no rule (??). But definitely, both names are legally yours. Same goes for your partner. S/he can use either name. Is that what you are wondering? I don't know if I'm on the right track.

My mother's been married twice. She uses all three of her names--even on important docs. For years now. Just switchin'. No one has ever said anything to her--lol.
