That's a fantastic question!

I'm actually going to Mexico next week where my sister and her fiancee are going to be married. I'm sure it varies per country, but I know even though they'll be married in Mexico, when they return to Canada the marriage is NOT recognized- They still have to go to a justice of the peace and essentially do it again.

Now my girlfriend and I are thinking of the same things, as she's a Swedish citizen and so we've been looking into all the paper work involved, and at least to bring her into Canada and prove we're married the government requires photos of us together over the past years, details of any wedding or engagements, seriously tonnes of paper work.

Again though, I certainly don't know all the in's and outs of it. If anyone else has any direct experience with this, please post it!

Tis a small world ... the country in question for this couple is Sweden. They're going to be married here & wanted to know how the Canada will reconize their marrige.

We married in Canada & have lived in Sweden for the last 13 years. Both the countries reconize the marriage & is valid ... however immigrating is another issue.

This is info for Canadians who want to marry in Sweden ... via the CDN. Embassy ... some of course need to have a divorce decree from CDN.

[quote]Canadian citizens wishing to be married in Sweden are often required to present to local authorities a letter that the Canadian government has no objection to its citizens marrying in Sweden. The Consular Section of the Embassy would issue a "Statement in Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment" to a Canadian citizen upon request. To obtain this letter, the Canadian citizen must provide a valid Canadian passport and details of the marriage. The fee for this service is CDN$ 50 (SEK280). Please call for an appointment.
