Marrying Costa Rican fiancee in Canada.

I am a Canadian living in Costa Rica and engaged to marry my boyfriend. We will go to Canada for a few months this year March-September, while my fiancee has a work visa in Canada with a company. The work visa will end at the end of September. If we get married after the work season is over, can we apply for citizenship together and he stays in Canada as my husband, while they assess his application for permanent residency.

Please help me figure this out. A lot depends on these plans.
