Mechanical Eng. in big need for a chang

Hey guys,

Im brand new on this site (just registered this morning) and i would like some input and opinions on my situation.
Im 28, i have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, i do not have my P.Eng certification yet, i work in Alberta but live in New Brunswick. Me and my girlfriend (20)have been contemplating the idea of moving to Australia for a little while now. But here is the kicker, i still ow 21k$ in student loans...that's the only thing holding me back right now...
My girlfriend does not have a completed post-secondary education as she took a break from U for a while to find out what she wants to do for the rest of her life.
I would be ready to find something not even related to engineering at first, but i will obviously need something relatively lucrative in the near future...
What do you guys recommend? Apply for a temp travel visa first and then a work visa? Where should i look for engineering position?
Any comments, opinions, testimonials would be very appreciated.

Oh BTW for what it's worth i am perfectly bilingual in French (first language) and english.

Cheers mates (i have to practive the accent!)
