Medical Residency, can my CDN spouse work in US?

Both me and spouse are Canadian Citizens. Will be moving to the states for a 3year pediatrics residency on a J-1 visa. Can my spouse also obtain a J-1 or similar easily to work during this time?

Yes they can get a J-2 and subsequently work--but they have to apply for and receive an EAD first--the J-2 provides a basis for getting the EAD but the J-2 by itself is not authorization to work.
