Medicare benefit for former TN permit holder

Post Sat Jan 03, 2009 6:32 pm

I am a TN permit holder. If I earned enough credit and reach the age of 65. Can I received Medicare benefit after I move back to Canada or living overseas?

Can I appy for refund if Medicare benefit is not for people like us?

Are you eligible for medicare services from Canada you mean if you move back to Canada?

Yes, after a few months to re-establish residency you are again eligible for provincial healthcare services. How long depends on the province you're living in.

If you are no longer a resident of Canada however, no, you are not eligible for provincial healthcare benefits.

Do a websearch for your home province's health care webpage.

Will the US government pay for the services for the Medicare tax I paid to the US Government over all these years?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you want to know are you eligible for Mediare benefits in the US after you retire. Right? Unfortunately, the answer is nope, non-immigrants/non-LPRs are not eligible for medicare benefits in the US. And some classifications of sponsored immigrants (like spouses) are not eligible for medicare benefits until they have 40 working quarters/10 years employment.

Qualified aliens include (Sec 431):

Legal Permanent Residents
Asylees
Refugees
Aliens paroled into the U.S. for at least one year
Aliens whose deportations are being withheld
Aliens granted conditional entry (prior to April 1, 1980)
Battered alien spouses, battered alien children, the alien parents of battered children, and alien children of battered parents who fit certain criteria
Cuban/Haitian entrants
Victims of a severe form of trafficking

If you somehow get a green card, and another 10 years work under your belt (don't know if your years at TN would count toward it. Likely not), then you would qualify.

"No" is the answer to both questions I'm afraid, the only real benefit you get is that your social security contributions count towards CPP under the totalization agreement.
Steve.
