I have to say that I'm feeling a bit lucky after reading these posts. We have been living in Germany for almost three years now and overall I would say the experience had been positive. I suck at German, tried taking courses, my instructor speaks with me in English Wink , what do you think he's trying to say. I have met both German friends and expats since moving here. It started mostly with co workers of my husband but has developed into a nice little group. We are in Bensheim which is about 25-30 minutes from Heidelberg. I am not a quiet or shy person and maybe this had helped, I also had to keep a good attitude as an example to our kids. There is so much to see and do and I want to take in as much as possible before we move again. I have a friend from Texas that is married to a German and I understand that it has it's challenges, but hey, we all signed up for this so go out there and speak bad German and annoy people and get strange looks and continue to project you're Canadianness and enjoy the adventure!

I should say one thing though. Being a Canadian Auslander in Germany is not so bad. Most Germans have a love a ffair with Canada. I find people are much friendlier when they find out you are not American or British.
Overall,I can't complain too much with Germany, I have been here for 9 yrs now.
Could be worse / Could be better.

hey lolarock - bensheim, just a short train ride from Worms, right? At least i think - took at trip down to Lorsch, went to an awesome eiscafe, and took a look at the Kloster.
Im not too sure if being a canadian makes a big difference - i personally havent seen it. I dont know, generally people say that the dont like americians or dont like whats going on, or whatever, but then anything that says "americian" on the labels gets sold like hotcakes! go figure.

Ya it's dumb - they all whine about the US but are the first ones to run out and buy a rap album they don't understand or buy things that say America on them, or products that are supposedly "american". It's really bad. I remember buying some "America Muffins" in germany - they were so disgusting, and not even close to what one would call a muffin. More like a cardboard cupcake. Oh well Smile

You got that right! Are you talking about those muffins from the aldi? lol
have you tried their "ranch" dressing or "ceasar" lol thatīll really make you puke. I always ask my family and friends to send me "care packages" with lots of goodies it in and things that i would normally never eat at home - ie mac and cheese, stuffing, reese pieces butter cups ...
What part are you in?

I'm in Budapest, Hungary now and you don't even wanna know about what they call caesar dressing here. Every place has it's own version, I think the worst one I had so far had carrot and corn in it. Shocked

I used to get care packages too with goodies from home. Helped make things a little easier!

Hey...Yes Bensheim is really close to Lorsch (?). I do find a better attitude when people find out that I'm Canadian, it drives my American friend crazy actually. The care packages from home for me include brown sugar, baking soda and baking powder, clamato juice for caesars and if I get REALLY lucky, lobster (I'm from NS). Great, now I'm hungry and I want a drink! I have another Canadian friend in Bensheim, pretty lucky considering the size of the town, she's from Montreal. Well, if anyone has caesar mix, I'm up for a meeting...

i don't know if this will help you at all, but my mom is in this woman's social group for English speaking people in the Mannheim/Heidelberg/ Karlsruhe area. They meet at different people's houses in the area about once a month, and I'm sure some locations would be close to you. It is called the DAV, and if you'd like to contact them, here is my mom's email: johnandlizrutledge@yahoo.ca
