hey! I've lived in Germany since I was 4. We moved here from south Africa- my dad's German and my mom's from the states. My mother had a very hard time adjusting to Germany as well, she took a long time until she could speak the language, but by now she's really good at it. She started working again after us kids moved out and so, through that, she got some more contact to other people, also Germans. We were really lucky, because we had another American couple living next door to us, so that was a lot of support during that time. All in all she still misses her home a lot though and visits there at least once a year.
I can imagine how it must be feeling so excluded. Although I think it depends on how big the city is you live in. Germans can be really awful Razz, but you should just try not taking it to personally. When my cousin was here in November she just kept smiling at people and saying hello. That makes Germans feel really unsure and if they were mean and you just smile and say "thank you" they feel really bad after wards Wink

I also am having a difficult time here. I have never been so lonely in my life! I find that when we go out with people they are weary to talk to me. I have noticed it is because they have a fear there english isn't good enough. Normally after a few drinks I can convince someone to talk with me. But it isn't the same as having your own friends in your own language. I have also tried to make friends through group activities or have tried to get close to my boyfriends friends girlfriends but I think the culture barrier is quite strong.

I some people are meeting near Stuttgart or in Berlin I would be interested. I'm living near Stuttgart and my girlfriend is in Berlin, so I'm travelling between both cities often.

Hi Lolarock,

my other half moved over from Britain last year
and finds it sometimes quite hard (language barrier, meeting people who have also relocated from english speaking countries). To help him settle in I was wondering, if you fancied to meet a nice (German/welsh-couple)?
It would be lovely to meet someone who´s been in the same situation. We live in Karlsruhe - so that is not really far away! Get in touch with us! (Miriam_Wagner@web.de)

Take care - Miriam

We have been living in Germany for almost three years now and overall I would say the experience had been positive. I suck at German, tried taking courses, my instructor speaks with me in English Wink , what do you think he's trying to say. I have met both German friends and expats since moving here. It started mostly with co workers of my husband but has developed into a nice little group. We are in Bensheim which is about 25-30 minutes from Heidelberg. I am not a quiet or shy person and maybe this had helped, I also had to keep a good attitude as an example to our kids. There is so much to see and do and I want to take in as much as possible before we move again. I have a friend from Texas that is married to a German and I understand that it has it's challenges, but hey, we all signed up for this so go out there and speak bad German and annoy people and get strange looks and continue to project you're Canadianness and enjoy the adventure!

I definitely know how you feel. I like the little town I'm in but I miss having friends, conversations in english that aren't an effort, etc.

I'm 21 and living in Staufen (near Freiburg) in The Black Forest! Anyone?
