Wow, you just about summed up how I feel here. Same thing, exciting life at home, just my boyfriends friends here, and one other friend. Im living in Saarland, and was in Heidelberg last week...i was shocked be the number of English speaking people there........seems like every other person i spoke to spoke English, so I would be soooo surpirsed if there wasnt a group or something. I would try working part time in a hostel. Thats the best way to make friends, because everyone is in the same sopt as you, and really want to talk and make friends. I tried that on another trip and it worked wonders. ANd the hostels seem to know everything about whats going on. As well, try a SWAP office, or website. Even though you arent on a SWAP exchange from Canada, they aer often willing to help you out. Im in the smallest village ever, living with my German boyfriend, so I cant try doing that myself. Im trying to open up a Canadian Pub here, though, so if I manage to do it, Ill have regular Canadian meets and things......good luck.

Hope you had a good time in Heidelberg last week
You would have heard lots of people speaking english for two reasons. It is a tourist town and we get lots of visitors plus the American Army is here and there are approx 75,000 soldiers and families stationed in the vicinity. There are also lots of people who work for the Army in a civillian capacity who are english plus companies such as SAP,Sas AND EMBOL are here aswell.
If you get bored in Saarland come and see us again in Heidelberg. My wife and i are here plus Tina who has also posted here. We are all from Ontario.
Hope to hear from you
David

Hallo All!

Just new to this board. Rob and I have been in Germany for 6 years and tried to start a Canadian Meetup board for Frankfurt. Alas not enough of you around or??

Anyways, we bought a place close to Frankfurt, so should anyone want to come by, lets arrange something.

We are both from Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario sure miss our Tim Hortons.

We are both very active on www.britboard.de & www.toytownmunich.com (Tim Hortons Man and Tim Hortons Lady)

Drop us a line...

I've been feeling more and more homesick and I've been here for over 6 months now. I haven't made any friends of my own. My bf and I hangout with his friends who are great but it just isn't the same. I've met some ppl in my German classes, all nice non-Germans, that all feel homesick too. I also find German so hard to learn and everyone always switches into english when I try speaking German. It's nice to find out that I am not the only Canadian feeling this way. But what can I say other than there is no place like home and that I've booked my flight home and am sooooo excited to go back to Canada. I hope that everything works out for you here and that you don't feel the way you do much longer.

Just a few tips.. I have been living all over Germany for the past 14 years. It has not been a great experience for me.

If I were to make one recommendation it would be to take a good language program to develop good speaking skills.

I read once that many north americans experience depression after a time living here. I think it is important to learn not to take things personally. I try to keep a positive perspective to the culture and the mindset but admit it is very trying. There has not been one day go by where I have not been insulted, frustrated or annoyed with the behaviors of others and the rules. It seems they live in the dark ages with all their outdated rules about everything. Any suggestions I might have to better the "stimme" so to say are immediately met with that hand gesture and head shake which ends the conversation!!

Having recently met up with other canadians in a bar (zufällig) I realized how much I miss the interaction with like minded people. I actually had fun for the first time in a long time. (excluding the trips home) So I hope to make contact with others who would enjoy communicating on line. Any takers?

Sad I know exactly what you mean, all "my friends" are my wife's friend.
It sucks.
