If you are only on a temp sponsored visa like the 457 then no, you are not covered, So you'll have to get private health care that is aimed at temp visa holders. It is available but it is pretty expensive because you won't get anthing from Medicare.

For example:
http://www.medibank.com.au/Visitors-Cov ... rance.aspx

I know it is offered with other companies as well, it just takes a bit more looking.

If you have a PR visa then you only really need cover if you make too much. It used to be $50,000 for a single person and $100,000 for a couple. But it's recently changed and I think it's now $75,000 for a single and $150,000 for a couple.

We have PR at the moment and are with Medibank Private. But we will be dropping it shortly because we no longer need it due to the change in income levels.

Soon to be moving down under

Post Wed Aug 20, 2008 8:06 am

I am actually in the process of moving to Melbourne and will hopefully be landing there in December of this year. I lived in Aussie once before and know how lonely it can get for someone that knows what you grew up with and are familiar with - peanut butter on toast not vegemite! LOL I thought to join this group and start contact now so that when I finally do arrive I hav a "support" system in place if I am craving the whole Canadianna thing! Drop me a note if you wish and say hi!

hey guys,

i'm currently on the Gold Coast but will be heading to melbourne for the first time this week - is anyone interested in meeting up for coffee? i haven't met another canadian for some time, and yes, it would be great to reminisce about the yumminess of PB rather than vegemite

re: medical coverage - i'm also under the 457 visa, and i'm currently on medicare private. it is expensive and not as comprehensive as canadian healthcare but if you're young and healthy, it does its job (i think under the 457 employer sponsored class, healthcare is a requirement). i'm paying $114 for just me per month.

Visiting Melbourne in October 2008

Post Thu Sep 11, 2008 11:23 am

Hi Everyone,
I'm a 27 year old girl from Toronto and will be traveling in Melbourne for my first time in October from the 15th to 17th. I'm wondering if there are any canadians or aussies that are interested in showing me around the city? I'm not one for the tourist attractions, I love seeing the city from a locals point of view because I find that I learn more about the city that way.

October 16th I'm hoping to be touristy and either see the mini penguins on Phillip Island or take a tour bus out to the Great Ocean Road. I can't decide on which one I should do. Any suggestions? And would you want to see either of those with me?

Also any suggestions on where to stay in Melbourne? I'd like to be downtown and walking distance to most things, bars, shopping, live music etc.

Thanks!
Bonnie :)

I'm a Ontario gal who has been living here on and off for the last 5 years. Right now I'm studying (Arts/Law at Melbourne Uni) and working p/t. I love this place but had a random moment of missing Canadianness today and thought I might try and meet some Canadians here in Melbourne. I know I'm not the only one!

So if you're up for a coffee and mutal pining for poutine and jackpines, or if you're new in town and need a tour guide who can translate local-speak then drop me a line.

I will be moving to Melbourne at the end of August. So what is it like there?? I really hope that I am able to meet Canadians. I get homesick pretty easy, so I hope I am making the right move.
