Melbourne Town

Hello fellow Canadians (and wanna-be Canadians - you know who you are!)

I'm a Ontario gal who has been living here on and off for the last 5 years. Right now I'm studying (Arts/Law at Melbourne Uni) and working p/t. I love this place but had a random moment of missing Canadianness today and thought I might try and meet some Canadians here in Melbourne. I know I'm not the only one!

So if you're up for a coffee and mutal pining for poutine and jackpines, or if you're new in town and need a tour guide who can translate local-speak then drop me a line.

Rosemary

Like you I have moments of missing Canadian culture and "ways"...though love Melbourne and what it has to offer. I did find a Canadian club here in Victoria but from the looks of the website I don't think I would be interested.
Have you had the opportunity to meet other Canadians who would be interested in socializing?

Becca,

Although I'm told there are heaps of Canadians living here in Melbourne I rarely come across any. And, as you can see, the response to this attempt has been essentially non-existant.

Do you know Canadians in Melbourne? Are you in melbourne yourself?

I also saw that vic club but it seems perhaps more for familys or people who need to pay large membership fees to make friends. I'd just like a chance to catch up with some folks who I can "eh" with a bit.

Hi Theresa and everyone,

I am in the process of immigrating here and can't work so its tough to meet people. If anyone wants to get together for a hockey game on Fox sports in a Pub or otherwise let me know. Good luck finding a Canucks game.

In the past few years FoxSports has played a few of the playoff games live. Usually on FoxSports2 or 3. I have gone to the Casino for some Sunday morning games. Or try and convince someone in Canada to set up a slingbox for you.

Hi Fellow Canadian ladies

I as well live and work in Melbourne. I have been here for about two and a half years and am also wondering where all the Canadians are. I would love to meet more fellow canadians for a drink or two and reminese of good old Canada eh!. If anyone is keen too.
I am also trying to get some kind of medical plan, which has proven to be challenging seeing as I am not as of yet a permanent resident. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice they can give me as I am on a working sponsorship visa?

Thanks Jules

Hello!
It is true that fellow Canadians are a bit hard to find around here!
Me and my boyfriend have been in Melbourne for about a year now, and I got my sponsored working visa, so it seems like i'll be hanging around a little while longer!

And as Jules posted above, I am also trying to find a medical plan, and it turns out to be a little more complicated, and perhaps expensive, than I expected. Coming from a world of free medicare, it seems a bit odd to have to pay for it, but if there are any suggestions as of where to look, it'd be appreciated!

gen.b, when you say medical plan, do you mean you're not covered by Australian Medicare or you are covered by Australian Medicare but you want to supplement with private insurance? If Australian Medicare doesn't cover you then none of the private insurers will cover you (I think), and you'll have to buy overseas travel medical insurance from a Canadian agent.
